A belated account of my weekend with Shannon

Friday night Shannon and I headed downtown along with an assortment of her cousins and in-laws, where we ended up drinking in the lounge of a navy boat. No kidding. Shannon's cousin is in the navy, so he signed us all in and we had the lounge pretty much to ourselves. And we ended up drinking for free... every time we went to the bar, it turned out that somebody had put money down. On top of that, the bartender was all about pouring generous doubles. And every now and then, someone would randomly hand out shots. (Note: My first ever taste of sambuca reminded me of exactly how much I loathe black licorice. And the aftertaste just will not die.)

The weird thing, though, was the bathrooms. Because we were on a navy vessel and military security whatnot was an issue, we had to be escorted to the bathrooms whenever we wanted to go. With all the drinking in the picture, this quickly degraded into a weird sort of musical chairs in which I eventually came to fell that I should be raising my hand and asking permission before getting up. I do understand the rule... but it seems funny to think of a gaggle of drunken university girls being a threat to the security of anything other than their own centres of balance.

We left there at 11:00, and managed to be surprisingly successful at climbing the ladder-stairs hybrids we had to take to get back out again... although I kept knocking my sandal off on the raised things in the doorways. From there we headed to the Dome, where Shannon's cousin and his friend stripped down to Speedos to get in the hot tub on the dance floor while Shannon mocked them for how they were going to end up looking like they wet themselves when they pulled their pants on afterwards. More importantly though, we danced. Friday was the first time in a long time that I've really had a chance to dance. It was great... the dance floor was crowded without being the sardine can that is the dance floor at the Axe, and the music was probably the most danceable I've heard at a bar in ages (not that that's necessarily saying much, but I'm not going to complain).

Saturday we went shopping down town for a bit. A little rainy, but still good. while I was pointing things out to Shannon, it occurred to me that it's probably really weird that I think Venus Envy and Freak Lunchbox are the best two stores in downtown Halifax.

We eventually met up with Shannon's dad and hit Swiss Chalet for dinner. Apparently it's a bit of a family tradition for her, too. After that, we went back downtown to see some live music. Shannon's dad had heard that some guy he was a fan of was supposed to be playing at a bar down by the waterfront... it turned out that he'd gotten the name wrong, but a guy named Dutch Robinson was going to be there, so we stuck around. Holy awkwardness... the music he played ranged from cuddle music to sexy music. In between numbers, he'd go on about how when they got home, the ladies should step into the light and slowly unbutton their shirts and essentially be all sexy-like for their men. Meanwhile, Shannon and I sat on one side of the booth sipping eight dollar cocktails and exchanging glances about the weirdness while Shannon's dad sat on the other side apparently oblivious to our discomfort. The music was good, but between the weird and the tired, we were glad to head home.

All in all, though, it was a pretty cool weekend. It was cool to see Shannon again. I guess next time I see her it'll be sooner; she's decided to move home to Newfoundland. So, until Christmas! ; )

So, I'm heading to Halifax for the weekend. My friend Shannon from high school is in town, and I haven't seen her in two and a half years. I'm really looking forward to it; Shannon is loads of fun. Plus, I haven't had a girlie weekend in ages. : )

Happy birthday to hotchickswithsuperpowers.net!

I posted my first blog entry a year ago today. It's been probably a more interesting year than has been reflected in this blog - prolific and open I am not - but all in all, I'm just happy that I've made it a year without completely losing interest in it. : )

The least recent of these was from July 17th. This is getting ridiculous; I'm quite sure I spend more time deleting spam comments than I spend actually blogging.

Mmmm. Two large windows and two fans make my room awesome.

Also, I'm pretty much bored of trying to come up with titles for entries, so I'm probably not going to bother with it so much any more.

My parents have left. For everyone who didn't already know, they came to visit me last Monday and have been staying with me since. It was great to see them again; it's the first time since Christmas that I have. But it's so good to have my apartment to myself again. It's not a tiny place, but it's definitely too small for three people - in particular when those three people happen to be myself, my mom, and my dad.

As a result of this visit, I've seen a lot of movies and been incredibly stressed. Also my apartment is exceptionally clean. And I have about a sixth of a rather large cheesecake in the fridge.
